Abba Yusuf urges peaceful takutaha in Kano

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, urged Muslims across Kano State to reflect the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) through peace, compassion, justice and tolerance as residents marked the traditional Takutaha Maulud celebration across the ancient city of Kano.

The governor’s message came as residents observed Takutaha, a longstanding religious and cultural occasion associated with the Maulud season and traditionally observed on the 19th of Rabi’ul Awwal.

Kano State had declared Tuesday a work-free day to allow residents to participate in the celebration.

In a statement issued by his spokesman, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Yusuf described Takutaha as an important part of Kano’s Islamic heritage and an occasion that has continued to bring residents together through shared religious and cultural traditions.

“Takutaha remains an important part of Kano’s rich Islamic heritage. For generations, our people have remained committed to preserving the religious and cultural practices associated with the Maulud celebration,” Yusuf said.

The governor urged Muslims to ensure that the values celebrated during the occasion extend beyond the festivities and become part of everyday conduct.

“I urge Muslims across the state to renew their commitment to the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), particularly his messages of peace, compassion, tolerance, justice and peaceful coexistence,” he said.

Yusuf’s appeal places particular emphasis on peaceful coexistence at a time when Kano’s Takutaha celebration continues to draw large gatherings, religious groups and families into public spaces across the city.

The annual observance has a distinctive place in Kano’s religious and cultural life.

Historical accounts describe Takutaha as the seventh-day commemoration following the Prophet’s birth, corresponding with the traditional timing of a naming ceremony.

The occasion has evolved into a colourful public celebration, with groups traditionally moving through parts of the ancient city while reciting praise poetry and expressing devotion to the Prophet.

Dala and Goron Dutse are among locations associated with the festivities.

Kano’s decision to make September 1 a work-free day also underlines the significance attached to the occasion. Circular No. 7/2026, approved by Governor Yusuf, stated that the holiday coincides with 19th Rabi’ul Awwal, 1448 AH, and was intended to enable residents to observe Takutaha.

Essential services were expected to continue operating.

The celebration has historically provided more than a religious gathering. It has become a meeting point for faith, community identity and Kano’s distinctive Hausa cultural heritage, with large numbers of residents participating in processions, praise singing and communal activities.

Radio Nigeria reported that the previous year’s celebration attracted thousands of residents, with Islamic scholars using the occasion to encourage Muslims to emulate the Prophet’s humility, peace and compassion.

For Yusuf, preserving that heritage should go hand in hand with strengthening social harmony.

The governor called on Kano residents to maintain the spirit of unity and brotherhood associated with Takutaha, arguing that mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence are essential to the state’s continued development.

He also commended traditional rulers, Islamic scholars, community leaders and organisers for helping to preserve the religious and cultural traditions surrounding the celebration.

Yusuf further placed responsibility on younger residents to ensure that the heritage survives beyond the present generation.

“Our younger generations must learn, appreciate and preserve the heritage handed down to us by our forefathers. This is essential to maintaining the identity and values that make Kano unique,” he said.

The governor’s message also reflects the broader role religious celebrations can play in a state where faith and cultural identity are closely intertwined.

Rather than viewing Takutaha solely as a ceremonial occasion, Yusuf urged residents to use it as a moment for personal reflection and stronger relationships within their communities.

The call comes against the backdrop of Kano’s long history as one of northern Nigeria’s major centres of Islamic scholarship and culture.

The city’s Maulud traditions have developed over generations, with different Muslim communities participating in various forms of commemoration.

Academic research has also documented the emergence and expansion of different Maulud festivals and Takutaha processions in contemporary Kano.

As residents mark this year’s celebration, the governor’s central message is therefore less about the spectacle of the occasion and more about what follows it.

For Yusuf, the enduring value of Takutaha lies in translating admiration for Prophet Muhammad (SAW) into conduct that strengthens peace, compassion, justice and tolerance.

He concluded by wishing Kano residents a peaceful and successful celebration and praying for continued peace, stability and prosperity across Kano State and Nigeria.
