Daniel Amokachi has praised Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani for fulfilling a 30-year-old promise to members of Nigeria’s historic 1996 Olympic gold-winning football team.

Amokachi, Garba Lawal and Emmanuel Babayaro, all members of the celebrated Atlanta 1996 Dream Team, joined Governor Sani on Tuesday during an inspection of the ongoing reconstruction of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna.

Speaking with journalists after the inspection, Amokachi said the Kaduna governor had delivered on a commitment that previous federal and state administrations had failed to honour.

He said the 1996 Olympic triumph brought promises from government authorities, but many of those pledges remained unfulfilled for three decades.

According to Amokachi, Governor Sani had now allocated plots of land to him, Lawal and Babayaro, while also directing that streets be named after members of the team who had not previously received such recognition.

“Uba Sani has made our dreams come true,” Amokachi said, expressing gratitude for what he described as a long-overdue gesture towards the football heroes.

The former Super Eagles forward said the veterans had struggled to find adequate words to thank the governor, particularly because the recognition came during their lifetimes rather than as a posthumous tribute.

Nigeria’s 1996 Olympic triumph remains one of the most celebrated moments in the country’s football history.

The Dream Team defeated Argentina 3-2 in the final in Atlanta to become the first African nation to win Olympic football gold.

For Amokachi, the significance of the Kaduna government’s gesture went beyond the allocation of property.

He said the governor’s decision demonstrated a willingness to recognise former players, coaches and administrators while they could still appreciate the honour.

Babayaro was particularly struck by the manner in which the land was allocated.

He recalled initially doubting the gesture when Lawal contacted him with the documents, suspecting that the veterans might eventually be asked to participate in a political event.

“The next thing that came to my mind was that maybe they needed us to come for one elaborate event and use it for some political whatever,” Babayaro said.

“But guess what, nothing of such came up.”

The former goalkeeper said the absence of political conditions made the gesture even more meaningful.

“That means he gave us those lands because he is that awesome,” he added.

Babayaro also praised the governor for bringing Kaduna’s football community together, saying the sport was beginning to thrive in the state again.

He described the ongoing redevelopment of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium as evidence of the renewed attention being given to football in Kaduna.

Lawal, another member of the 1996 Olympic-winning side and former Kaduna United general manager, described the rebuilt stadium as a potentially world-class facility.

He said its completion would mean the Super Eagles would no longer need to travel to Uyo for major training activities when a suitable facility was available in Kaduna.

“It’s a wonderful project and, by the grace of God, we shall come and unveil it by November,” Lawal said.

Governor Sani said his administration was determined to restore Kaduna’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading football centres.

He noted that the state had produced numerous footballers who went on to establish successful careers internationally.

“Kaduna is the leading footballing state in Nigeria. We have produced more stars that have gone out of the country and made their marks globally,” Sani said.

The governor said the rehabilitation of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium was part of a broader effort to restore the state’s sporting infrastructure and attract major competitions.

He recalled that the stadium, built in 1964 with an original capacity of 16,000, had deteriorated considerably before the current reconstruction began.

Sani said he had approached President Bola Tinubu to have the facility handed over to the Kaduna State Government because of the need for urgent intervention.

When completed, the stadium is expected to accommodate about 33,000 spectators and feature a hybrid playing surface combining natural grass and synthetic turf.

The governor has said the reconstruction is targeted for completion by November 2026.

Sani further argued that investment in football infrastructure could produce economic benefits for Kaduna through tourism, hospitality, transportation and other sectors linked to major sporting events.

He cited the substantial economic activity generated around major international football tournaments as evidence of the potential commercial value of modern sporting facilities.

For the veterans of Atlanta 1996, however, the stadium project represents more than a new sporting venue.

Three decades after they helped Nigeria achieve an unprecedented Olympic football triumph, the land allocations, street naming and renewed investment in Kaduna football offer a powerful reminder that sporting legacies can still be recognised long after the final whistle.

The 1996 Dream Team remains the first African men’s football side to win Olympic gold, a feat that transformed the players into enduring figures in Nigerian sporting history.
