Senator Gbenga Daniel, former Ogun State Governor and representative of Ogun East Senatorial District, will join Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, former Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Freedom Online Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief Gabriel Akinadewo, and Nigerian Guild of Editors President Eze Anaba at the Sheraton Lagos Hotel, Ikeja, on Thursday, September 3, 2026, for the seventh annual Freedom Online lecture, where Daniel will serve as Special Guest of Honour.

At 70, Daniel arrives at the gathering with a career that has crossed engineering, entrepreneurship, state administration and federal legislation.

His presence gives the occasion a distinctive dimension because his public life has been shaped as much by professional experience outside politics as by his years in government.

Born on April 6, 1956, Daniel built his early reputation as an engineer and businessman before entering the political arena.

He studied engineering at the University of Lagos and subsequently developed a career that took him from corporate management into entrepreneurship.

One of the defining chapters of that journey came in 1990, when Daniel founded Kresta Laurel, an electro-mechanical engineering company specialising in elevators, power systems and industrial equipment.

His earlier career at H.F. Schroeder West Africa had seen him rise to Deputy Managing Director, reportedly becoming the first African to hold that position in the company’s history.

The transition from the boardroom to government did not erase that engineering background.

Instead, Daniel carried the private-sector emphasis on infrastructure, enterprise and institutional development into his public career.

Daniel served as Governor of Ogun State from 2003 to 2011, completing two terms.

His administration placed considerable emphasis on infrastructure, industrial development, education and public-private partnerships.

Among the projects associated with his administration were the development of the state’s agro-allied cargo airport and the establishment of Tai Solarin University of Education.

His administration also pursued road and other infrastructure projects across Ogun.

Supporters of Daniel’s record often point to the combination of private investment and public administration as one of the defining features of his tenure.

His own professional background helped shape an approach in which government was expected to create conditions for businesses and institutions to grow.

That philosophy has remained visible in Daniel’s later legislative work.

Elected to the Senate in 2023, Daniel returned to national public life as the representative of Ogun East.

The National Assembly’s current profile lists him as an APC senator for the constituency.

One of his most prominent legislative interests has been regional development.

Daniel was a major proponent of the South-West Development Commission legislation, an initiative intended to provide a coordinated framework for development across the six South-West states.

Daniel has described the commission as an important institutional development for the region.

Speaking in 2025, he said its creation effectively introduced a regional layer of development coordination alongside the federal, state and local governments.

His interest in development also reflects the influence of the political tradition he encountered as a young man.

Daniel has spoken about his early admiration for the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and the ideas surrounding regional development, public education and economic organisation.

The year 2026 has provided another opportunity to reflect on that long journey. Daniel marked his 70th birthday in April, with political leaders and public figures acknowledging his contributions across business and government.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described Daniel as a renowned engineer, entrepreneur and politician, praising what he called his “professional exploits, governance strides, and political achievements”.

The birthday celebrations also produced a revealing personal moment.

Daniel unveiled four books as part of activities marking his 70th birthday, drawing former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former President Goodluck Jonathan and other prominent Nigerians.

The occasion offered a rare opportunity to consider his career beyond conventional political milestones.

Daniel’s story is consequently not simply that of a former governor who returned to the Senate. It is the story of an engineer who established a substantial business before assuming political office, then attempted to carry elements of that experience into governance and legislation.

The contrast is important. Nigerian politics often produces public figures whose careers are almost entirely defined by elected office.

Daniel’s trajectory is different. His business career preceded his governorship by more than a decade and has remained part of his public identity.

The Freedom Online lecture provides a fitting setting for that broader perspective. Sanwo-Olu is scheduled to deliver the lecture, Lai Mohammed will chair the occasion, Daniel will serve as Special Guest of Honour, while Anaba will be Chief Host.

The organisers have framed the event around major questions concerning Nigeria’s economy, security and national development.

Akinadewo said the decision to place insecurity prominently in the conversation was driven by the seriousness of the threat to the country, describing it as a “monster” capable of consuming the nation-state.

For Daniel, those subjects connect closely with the issues that have run through his career: infrastructure, economic opportunity, institutional development and the capacity of government to improve everyday life.

His appearance in Lagos therefore carries more than ceremonial significance.

It places a septuagenarian statesman with experience in the private sector, state administration and the National Assembly in a room where some of Nigeria’s most persistent development challenges will be examined.

There is also something quietly significant about the timing. Seven decades after his birth, more than 30 years after founding Kresta Laurel, 13 years after leaving the Ogun Government House and three years into his return to the Senate, Daniel remains part of the national conversation.

That endurance may ultimately be one of the clearest measures of his public career.

His influence has moved through different institutions and political seasons, but the underlying themes of enterprise, development and public service have remained remarkably consistent.
