The Adamawa State Police Command on Monday, September 8, 2026, arraigned 87-year-old Dahiru Garba before Chief Magistrate Court I in Yola over an alleged attack on Area Court judge Dauda Hamman in Fufore Local Government Area.

According to the police, Garba allegedly attacked Hamman with a cutlass while the judge was presiding over a case involving Garba and Ismail Yusuf at Mayo-Ine Area Court on August 31.

The command’s spokesperson, Suleiman Nguroje, said the elderly suspect allegedly struck the judge’s hand several times, causing what police described as grievous injuries.

The incident reportedly caused a dramatic disruption at the court as the judge was carrying out his judicial duties.

Following the attack, police officers arrested Garba and initially transferred the case from the Divisional Police Headquarters in Fufore to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yola on September 4 for further investigation.

After the investigation was completed, Garba was brought before Chief Magistrate Ismail Bello Shelleng on a one-count charge of causing grievous hurt, contrary to Section 219 of the Penal Code Law of Adamawa State, 2018.

When the charge was read and interpreted to him, Garba pleaded guilty and reportedly attributed his actions to the devil.

“I deeply regret it,” the defendant said, according to the police statement.

The court subsequently ordered that Garba be remanded at the Yola Correctional Facility pending further proceedings.

Adamawa State Commissioner of Police Kabir Hassan assured the public that the command would pursue the case diligently and ensure that due process was followed.

The case has drawn attention because of the age of the defendant and the fact that the alleged assault occurred inside a courtroom while a judicial proceeding was under way.

The police account remains an allegation against Garba, although his guilty plea relates to the charge brought before the magistrate court. Further proceedings will determine the legal consequences of the incident.
