2027 Election: Peter Obi proposes dual result transmission system

Former Anambra State Governor and National Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has unveiled a plan to introduce a dual result transmission system aimed at strengthening transparency in Nigeria’s 2027 general election.

Peter Obi explained during an interview on Arise Television on Thursday that the proposed system would allow his team to independently receive and monitor results from polling units in real time, alongside the official transmission conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

“We must make sure that at every polling unit, the votes are counted, the votes are recorded properly, the votes are transmitted properly,” Peter Obi said, outlining what he described as a decisive step towards credible elections.

The proposal, referred to as the Peter Obi dual result transmission strategy, is designed to feed verified results directly into a party-managed situation room while INEC processes its official collation.

Peter Obi stressed that the initiative is not intended to create a parallel electoral authority but to enhance accountability and public trust in the process.

“All we are saying is that this time around, we will make sure that in every polling unit, we must have a system that transmits to our own situation room the correct results,” Peter Obi added.

The plan comes against the backdrop of longstanding concerns over election transparency in Nigeria, particularly following the 2023 presidential election, in which Peter Obi was a leading contender under the Labour Party.

Disputes over result transmission and collation processes during that election cycle intensified calls for reform and technological safeguards.

Peter Obi suggested that similar monitoring systems could be adopted by civil society groups and other political organisations, noting that broader participation could help prevent discrepancies between polling unit results and final announcements.

“And I’m sure there are so many other agencies that intend to do the same thing. So we’re not going to have a situation where somebody pronounces something that didn’t emanate from the polling unit,” Peter Obi said.

In a wider context, Peter Obi pointed to countries such as Ghana as examples where transparent electoral systems have strengthened democratic outcomes.

Peter Obi also framed the forthcoming election as a defining moment for citizens, describing it as a contest shaped by public demand for accountability rather than traditional party structures.

The proposal adds a fresh dimension to early campaign strategies ahead of 2027, as political actors begin positioning around electoral reforms, technology adoption, and voter confidence.
