Fallen water tank kills family of 5 in Enugu

A fallen water tank killed five members of the family of Raphael Onwu in Nenwenta community, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, on September 18, 2026, after a concrete reservoir attached to a neighbouring uncompleted building collapsed onto their home.

Enugu State Police Command has arrested the owner of the property, identified as Onyedikachi Nkwo, as investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal collapse.

The police said officers received a report of the incident at about 5:00 a.m. and arrived at the scene around 5:45 a.m.

According to the command’s spokesperson, Superintendent Daniel Ndukwe, the concrete reservoir gave way and crashed onto Onwu’s adjoining house.

Onwu, his wife, his mother and two of his children were killed in the collapse. A nine-year-old boy who was also inside the house survived and was taken to hospital for treatment by officers from the Awgu Division.

Personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency and members of the community also assisted in the rescue operation.

Ndukwe said the bodies of the five victims were recovered and taken to hospital, where they were confirmed dead before being deposited at a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

The incident has prompted a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse and whether construction or safety requirements were breached.

Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Bitrus Giwa, ordered a full investigation and expressed condolences to the victims’ relatives and the wider community.

Giwa said appropriate action would be taken after the investigation is concluded.

The commissioner also urged property owners and builders to comply with approved construction standards and engage qualified professionals when undertaking building work.

The tragedy has renewed attention on the risks associated with unsafe structures and construction practices, particularly where heavy installations are positioned close to occupied residential buildings.

For the surviving nine-year-old and the wider community, the incident has left a devastating human cost while authorities continue to establish what led to the reservoir’s collapse.
