Cassius Newton, the 34-year-old former Chelsea Academy player and son of ex-Chelsea midfielder and coach Eddie Newton, died alongside his friend Aran Martinson during a desert hike in Wadi Naqab, Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, on July 18, 2026, with an Essex coroner later ruling that both deaths were the result of misadventure.

The inquest heard that Newton and 33-year-old Martinson had set out at about 7am for what was described as a recreational walking route in a mountainous area where temperatures exceeded 40C and conditions could feel considerably hotter inside the canyons.

Newton had spoken to his wife at about 2am before leaving for the hike.

She expressed concerns about the extreme heat and urged him not to go, but he proceeded with the trip.

The court also heard that Newton had been out the previous night, raising the possibility that he had not had enough sleep.

His phone may also not have been adequately charged, according to evidence presented at the inquest.

When neither man returned or responded to messages, their wives contacted authorities and a search operation was launched.

Rescuers eventually found Newton approximately 3km to 4km from the vehicle the men had used. Martinson was discovered about 350 metres away.

Both were found among large rocks and were taken to hospital in Ras Al Khaimah, where their deaths were confirmed on July 18.

The medical evidence pointed to the same underlying danger: severe heat exposure.

The provisional causes of death were recorded as cardiac and respiratory arrest linked to a severe rise in body temperature and heat stress.

The subsequent inquest heard that the extreme heat caused their body temperatures to rise severely, ultimately leading to organ failure.

Essex area coroner Michelle Brown concluded that the deaths amounted to misadventure, describing the circumstances as “an intentional trip with unintended consequences”.

Brown said the route was a recreational hike that did not require specialist equipment and would ordinarily take about four hours.

Her finding reflected the fact that the men had deliberately undertaken the journey, while the fatal outcome was unintended.

Messages between Martinson and his wife also gave the court a glimpse into the hours before the tragedy.

At 9:26am, she messaged him, “You must be cooking.”

When he continued to remain unresponsive, she later sent another anxious message expressing concern about the lack of contact.

For Newton’s family, the tragedy carried an additional connection to English football.

His father, Eddie Newton, enjoyed a long association with Chelsea as both a player and coach. Eddie played in midfield for the London club before later returning in coaching roles, including spells as an assistant manager.

Chelsea confirmed Cassius Newton’s connection to its academy and expressed its grief following his death.

“Chelsea Football Club is devastated to learn of the passing of former Academy player Cassius Newton, son of our former player and coach Eddie,” the club said, adding that its thoughts were with his family and friends.

Cassius had been living in Ras Al Khaimah with his wife after recently relocating to the UAE, while Martinson had also moved to the country for work.

Both men were therefore familiar with the region, but the inquest highlighted the exceptional conditions they encountered on the day of the hike.

Eddie Newton travelled to the UAE to identify his son’s body, according to evidence reported from the inquest.

The Essex Coroner’s Service records Cassius James Ikem Newton’s death as occurring in Ras Al Khaimah on July 18, 2026, aged 34.

The coroner’s records also show that Martinson’s inquest was opened separately.

The case has since drawn attention beyond Chelsea because of the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

What began as an ordinary recreational hike became a fatal encounter with extreme heat, leaving two families mourning and prompting a detailed examination of what happened during the men’s final hours.

For Newton’s family, however, the central story remains personal.

He was not simply the son of a former Premier League footballer or a former Chelsea Academy player, but a 34-year-old man whose life in the UAE ended during what was intended to be a routine outdoor adventure.

The coroner’s finding of misadventure formally closes the central question surrounding the circumstances of the deaths, while the details heard in court underline the potentially devastating consequences of hiking in severe heat.
