2027: Momodu predicts Obi will humiliate Soludo

The ADC chieftain says Peter Obi remains popular in the South-East and parts of the South-South, while backing Atiku Abubakar as opposition leaders consider a united challenge to President Tinubu.

African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Dele Momodu has predicted that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi could defeat Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo in the state, citing Obi’s popularity ahead of the 2027 general election.

Momodu made the prediction during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, while discussing the opposition’s prospects and the political challenges facing President Bola Tinubu ahead of his re-election bid.

The veteran journalist and publisher expressed confidence in Obi’s standing in the South-East, particularly in his home state of Anambra, arguing that the former presidential candidate retains considerable support in the region.

“I can tell you something. Soludo is the same. I can bet my life on it that Peter Obi will humiliate and disgrace Soludo in Anambra state. I have no question about that,” Momodu said.

The ADC chieftain described Obi as a “rock star” in the South-East and South-South, suggesting that his influence could shape the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.

According to Momodu, Obi’s continued popularity in the regions could pose a significant challenge to Tinubu, who will need broad electoral support to secure another term in office.

“Peter Obi is a rock star. Where he comes from, especially in the South-East and the South-South,” he said.

Momodu further predicted that Obi could defeat Tinubu and his supporters across much of the South-East and parts of the South-South, a development he described as potentially damaging to the President’s electoral prospects.

“The scenario is different this time. Peter Obi will humiliate Tinubu and all his supporters in the South-East and some parts of the South-South. And that’s dangerous for Tinubu,” he added.

The comments reflect Momodu’s assessment of the opposition’s chances ahead of the next presidential election. They are predictions about a future contest, rather than confirmed electoral outcomes.

Despite his confidence in Obi’s electoral strength, Momodu declared his support for former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who is also seeking to challenge Tinubu in 2027 under the ADC platform.

He nevertheless welcomed calls for opposition leaders to unite, arguing that cooperation among political rivals could improve their chances of defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I’m supporting Atiku, but I will be very happy when people say, ‘Oh, if you people don’t come together, you are going to lose election,’” he said.

His remarks highlight a key debate within opposition politics: whether leading figures should rally behind a single candidate or risk dividing votes among competing parties.

Momodu suggested that a united opposition could present a more formidable challenge to Tinubu, particularly if Obi maintains his influence in the South-East and South-South.

The journalist also argued that Tinubu would face a difficult path to re-election if he failed to secure strong support across the southern states.

According to Momodu, the President would need to consolidate his backing in the South’s three geopolitical zones while also competing for votes in the North.

“For Tinubu to win, he needs to lock down all the three regions in the South, and he now has to go and struggle in the North, where, number one, he was supported last time by President Muhammadu Buhari,” Momodu said.

Tinubu won the 2023 presidential election, while Obi finished third behind Atiku, who contested under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Obi, however, secured substantial support in the South-East and parts of the South-South during that election, establishing himself as a major political force in the regions.

Whether he can sustain that support in 2027 will depend on several factors, including party alliances, candidate selection, voter turnout and the wider political climate.

The 2027 presidential election is expected to feature renewed competition among Nigeria’s major political parties, with opposition leaders facing growing pressure to develop a common strategy against the APC.

Momodu’s comments underline the importance of regional voting patterns and political alliances in the forthcoming contest.

Although he expressed strong confidence in Obi’s ability to challenge Soludo in Anambra and weaken Tinubu’s support in parts of the South, the eventual outcome will be determined by voters at the polls.
