The sixth anniversary commemoration of the #EndSARS protests at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos was reportedly disrupted by tear gas on Tuesday, with governorship candidates of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, and African Democratic Congress, ADC, among those present.
The NDC governorship candidate, Funso Doherty, his running mate, Tolani Animashaun, and ADC candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour had gathered at the historic location to commemorate the October 20, 2020, #EndSARS incident.

Animashaun later confirmed the reported tear-gassing in a message to P.M. NEWS, saying she and others at the toll gate had been exposed to tear gas.
A video obtained by P.M. NEWS showed police officers addressing the crowd at the scene following the reported incident.
However, the footage did not capture the actual deployment of tear gas, and the circumstances surrounding the incident were not immediately clear.
The gathering took place six years after the controversial events at the Lekki Toll Gate during nationwide demonstrations against police brutality.
The memorial also came amid heightened political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Doherty and Rhodes-Vivour both seeking to become the next governor of Lagos State on different party platforms.
As of the time of filing the report, the Lagos State Police Command had not issued an official explanation regarding the reported tear-gassing.
