The Nigerian Army has deployed the first batch of 300 personnel to India for specialised mountain and jungle warfare training as part of efforts to strengthen the operational capabilities of its troops.

The soldiers departed Nigeria through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Thursday aboard two Indian Air Force aircraft — a C-17A and an Airbus A321A.

The training programme is expected to expose the personnel to specialised techniques required for operating in mountainous and jungle environments, where difficult terrain and demanding conditions require advanced combat skills and adaptability.

The deployment was confirmed in an operational report by the Nigerian Army.

Maj.-Gen. Umar Yusuf, Coordinator, Nigerian Army Military Training and Simulation, Army Headquarters, Department of Army Training, represented the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, during the departure.

Yusuf addressed the departing personnel and witnessed their movement alongside the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria.

The Army also disclosed that arrangements were ongoing to transport another 300 personnel to India, bringing the total number of soldiers scheduled to undergo the specialised training to 600.

The programme is expected to improve the troops’ ability to operate effectively in challenging environments while developing their adaptability and tactical skills.

The initiative comes as the Nigerian military continues to strengthen the training and preparedness of its personnel for diverse operational requirements.

The exposure to specialised warfare techniques in India is expected to complement existing training programmes and enhance the Army’s overall combat readiness.
