MTN MoMo tops Africa’s fintech reputation rankings

Africa Reputation Pulse’s 2026 audit gives MTN MoMo 18 out of 25 points, placing it ahead of four close competitors and underscoring the importance of transparency, trust and leadership credibility in the continent’s digital finance sector.

MTN MoMo has emerged as the highest-ranked company in the Africa Fintech Reputation Intelligence Report 2026, released on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, by Africa Reputation Pulse (ARP), after an assessment of 14 fintech and payments companies based on publicly available evidence covering the period from 1 January to 30 September 2026.

The mobile financial services platform secured 18 out of a possible 25 points, narrowly ahead of Moniepoint, Interswitch, Flutterwave and PawaPay, which each scored 17 points.

The findings place transparency, institutional trust, strategic progress, continental reach and leadership standing at the centre of an increasingly competitive African fintech landscape.

The report offers a different perspective on how financial technology companies are assessed, arguing that brand recognition and expansion alone do not necessarily translate into a strong institutional reputation.

For MTN MoMo, the leading score reflects a combination of multi-market reach, disclosure performance and its assessment under the report’s defined criteria.

The result comes as digital financial services continue to expand across Africa, bringing greater attention to the governance, reliability and public accountability of companies handling everyday financial transactions.

MTN’s own published figures illustrate the scale of the platform’s operations.

In the first half of 2026, MoMo recorded 70.8 million monthly active users and processed 13 billion transactions, with a total transaction value of US$330.5 billion.

The figures provide important commercial context for the platform’s continental presence, although transaction volumes and reputation scores measure different aspects of performance. MTN Group

The close scores among the four runners-up also highlight the different ways fintech businesses can build institutional credibility.

According to ARP, Moniepoint, Interswitch, Flutterwave and PawaPay demonstrated varying strengths in strategic momentum, consistency, reach and performance against the assessment criteria.

The report also raises questions about the relationship between market visibility and stakeholder confidence.

OPay and PalmPay, two widely recognised digital payments brands, were assessed less favourably in certain areas because of unresolved legal and customer-dispute issues identified in the evidence reviewed by ARP.

The findings should be understood within the report’s stated methodology rather than as a definitive verdict on either company’s overall business performance or the quality of every customer interaction.

The assessment does not establish legal liability, and the issues identified would need to be considered alongside the relevant records and responses from the companies concerned.

For Africa’s fintech sector, the broader message is that reputation increasingly extends beyond advertising, customer acquisition and transaction growth.

Companies are also competing for regulatory confidence, investor attention, strategic partnerships and the long-term trust of customers and business partners.

Philip Odiakose, lead analyst at Africa Reputation Pulse, said visibility alone was insufficient to establish a company’s reputation.

“Fintech reputation cannot be measured by visibility alone. A company may be widely recognised and still face questions about disclosure, leadership or how disputes are handled,” Odiakose said.

He added that businesses could strengthen their standing through consistent evidence of progress, credible communication and responsible institutional conduct.

“The important question is not simply who attracts the most attention, but what the available evidence tells us about the strength of each company’s reputation,” he said.

ARP said the report assessed each company across five dimensions: continental reach, strategic momentum, transparency, trust and leadership standing.

Each business was scored against a common framework, with a maximum of five points available in each dimension.

The review drew on publicly available company disclosures, official announcements, regulatory and court records, and published media reports.

ARP said its process distinguished documented facts from company claims, reported allegations and the analysts’ interpretation of the available evidence.

Artificial intelligence tools supported research and report production, while human analysts reviewed the findings and ratings.

The distinction is significant in a sector where promotional campaigns and headline transaction figures can attract considerable attention without necessarily providing a complete picture of corporate governance, dispute resolution or institutional accountability.

MTN Group has also continued investing in the development of its digital financial services ecosystem.

In June 2026, the company announced a strategic technology partnership with Ant International intended to advance its mobile money platform, improve integration and strengthen fraud prevention.

The announcement illustrates the broader strategic push behind digital finance, although the partnership itself is separate from ARP’s reputation assessment. MTN Group

The report’s implications extend to executive leadership and corporate communications teams.

While a strong public profile can help a business attract customers and partners, sustained confidence depends on whether public statements are supported by verifiable information, whether material developments are communicated consistently and whether disputes are handled transparently.

For consumers, the findings offer a reminder that reputation rankings are only one part of assessing a financial services provider.

Security, service reliability, fees, accessibility, complaint resolution and applicable regulatory protections remain important considerations when choosing a digital payment platform.

ARP describes the Africa Fintech Reputation Intelligence Report 2026 as a comparative assessment of the evidence available during its nine-month review period.

It is not a customer satisfaction survey, a comprehensive measurement of transaction volumes across Africa or a legal determination concerning the companies assessed.

The report’s central conclusion is that reputation is built through the relationship between what a company says, what it demonstrates and how it responds when challenges arise.

MTN MoMo’s first-place finish therefore offers a notable result in the 2026 assessment, while the narrow margin separating the leading companies suggests that institutional credibility will remain an important area of competition as Africa’s fintech industry matures.
