The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has outlined a roadmap to stabilise Nigeria’s power grid, expand transmission capacity and attract fresh investment into the electricity sector.
Tegbe unveiled the priorities while speaking at the opening of the Nigeria Energy Leadership Summit 2026 at the Landmark Centre in Lagos. The summit, which runs from October 27 to 29, is themed “Strengthening Power Delivery Through Execution, Coordination and Performance”.

The minister said the government’s focus must shift from designing reforms to implementing measures that deliver measurable improvements in electricity supply, system performance and the financial sustainability of the power market.
He outlined four priorities for the sector: enhancing energy zones, strengthening liquidity and sustainability, optimising existing assets, and expanding infrastructure to meet future demand.
According to him, the framework is intended to address challenges across electricity generation, transmission and distribution, ensuring that investments translate into more reliable power for households, businesses and industries.
The minister identified gas supply constraints, overstretched transmission infrastructure, distribution losses and accumulated sector liabilities as major challenges requiring coordinated intervention.

To improve electricity delivery and support industrial productivity, he highlighted three priority economic energy corridors: Lagos–Ogun, Benin–Enugu–Port Harcourt, and Abuja–Kaduna–Kano.
The strategy seeks to align electricity generation with transmission infrastructure, distribution capacity and identifiable demand across the corridors.
Tegbe said better coordination among these components would help address delivery constraints and ensure that available resources and investments produce tangible benefits for electricity consumers.
The minister also highlighted measures aimed at reducing technical and commercial losses, including the continued implementation of the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DSRP) and the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF).
On the sector’s financial challenges, Tegbe said the government was working to resolve legacy liabilities, adding that ₦1.23 trillion had been paid out of an estimated ₦3.3 trillion.
He also said measures were being taken to block financial leakages and prevent new liabilities from accumulating.
Beyond addressing outstanding obligations, Tegbe stressed the importance of optimising existing power-sector assets and expanding infrastructure to accommodate future electricity demand.
The initiatives form part of efforts to improve the operational and financial conditions of the electricity market while supporting more sustainable service delivery.

Tegbe said the reforms, aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, must ultimately produce tangible economic benefits.
He linked improved electricity delivery to industrial productivity, business growth, investment and job creation, underscoring the importance of reliable power supply to economic activity.
The minister’s address placed emphasis on implementation, coordination and performance as the government seeks to address longstanding constraints across the electricity value chain.
The Nigeria Energy Leadership Summit and Exhibition 2026 brings together energy companies, technology providers and other industry stakeholders to showcase solutions and explore investment opportunities across the power and wider energy value chain.

Running from October 27 to 29 at the Landmark Centre in Lagos, the event provides a platform for discussions on electricity delivery, infrastructure development and sector performance.
