A mother and her newborn have escaped a devastating fire that razed multiple buildings in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday at Oloje Housing Estate, with the fire reportedly starting from a freezer in one of the apartments.
According to reports, Aisha Suleiman was jolted awake around 2am by an unusual sound from beneath her freezer. She discovered flames gathering and tried to extinguish them with water and detergent, but the fire spread rapidly.
She managed to rescue her two children, including a newborn, and escape the apartment. Community members also assisted in the rescue.
The Kwara State Fire Service confirmed that the blaze affected three buildings, including two containing four-bedroom flats and a room-and-parlour self-contained apartment that was severely damaged.
Preliminary findings indicated that the collapse of a concrete pole supporting a 33kV electricity transmission line generated sparks that triggered the fire.
No lives were lost in the incident.
