The federal government of Nigeria has been fingered in the home invasion of the popular Yoruba freedom fighter, Sunday Adeymo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, in the early hours of Thursday.

The residence located at Soka area of Ibadan, Oyo State, was attacked by soldiers, according to a statement released by Igboho’s spokesman, Olayomi Koiki.

“I can confirm that those who came are definitely Nigerian soldiers,” Igboho’s spokesman, Olayomi Koiki, said in a Facebook Live chat. “There are more than 100 soldiers that came.”

Some of the occupants of the house were said to have been whisked away by the invaders who were dressed in military camouflage.

In what looked like an update, another popular broadcaster, Akanda Awikonko, who is also one of the close associates of Igboho accused the Nigerian presidency of the being responsible for the attack.

While confirming that Sunday Igboho is safe and at home, Awikonko revealed that one of his wives and domestic staff were among those abducted from the Ibadan home and later released in Ekiti.

“I can confirm to you that one of Sunday Igboho’s wives and cook were among those taken away. They were released in Ekiti and given N20,000 to find their way back to Oyo State.

“While the women were mostly released, it is unfortunate to note that Lady K Ifeoluwa has not been released.

“Others still with the abductors are up to four, namely Ladele, Sadiku and Omiyale,” he stated.

Awikonko insisted that those abducted must have been on their way to Abuja because Igboho’s wife and others were released in Ekiti State.

He then called on all human rights advocates in the country to fight for the release of these people and demand for massive protests nationwide against the federal government at United Nations, European Union, foreign embassies and ECOWAS offices.

“Attack on Sunday Igboho’s residence is an attack on us all,” he declared.

He added that if those allegedly abducted by the federal government are not released, the planned Lagos mega rally slated to hold on Saturday is cancelled.

Igboho’s Ibadan residence was first reportedly attacked in January 2021 after he issued a seven-day ultimatum to killer herders in the Ibarapa area of Oyo State.

He accused the herders of being culpable for the kidnappings and killings that happened in the town.

Igboho led a group of people who chased the herders out of Igangan at the expiration of the ultimatum. They ejected the Fulani leader of Igangan, Salihu Abdukadir.
