At least two police officers belonging to the South Sudan National Police Service have been killed after a South Sudan People’s Defense Forces Commander in Unity State ordered his soldiers to do so.

Leer County Commissioner said, that the incident occurred when the two officers questioned Gen. Gatkuoth Joknyang from releasing an armed civilian who is accusing of murder from police custody.

According to George Kong, the Leer County Commissioner, the suspect, Mayen Kuol, is accused of shooting a soldier belonging to South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) on January 26.

The suspect was then arrested two days after the killing and had been put in police custody pending trial which was supposed to be conducted on Friday, but was postponed to next Wednesday.

SSPDF area commander, General Gatkuoth Joknyang, then went into the police custody to release the suspect and when questioned by the police officers, he ordered his soldiers to shoot the police officers, killing them on spot.

“So, he went there to the director of the prison and he beat the director of the prison and he also beat the officers and took the suspect by force,” the Leer County Commissioner said.

“So when the police in the market asked him what happened, he told the body guards to shoot my soldiers and he shot the captain who is the bodyguard to the Commissioner [of Leer County] – two of them died yesterday,” he added.

The deceased are Sergeant Majak Thiang and Lt. Col. William Nyuon Jany Bol.
