‘One way’ VIP escort, FRSC officials clash on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

There was a mild drama on Tuesday as escorts conveying a VIP confronted officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, who stopped them from plying ‘one-way’ along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The escorts numbering about three specifically engaged the police officers attached to the road safety officials in a shouting match.

A combined team of military, police, and road safety officials stationed at the Warewa end of the road have been seen restricting vehicles avoiding traffic inward Lagos from taking ‘one-way’ in the past few weeks.

Their enforcement exercise, however, took a twist when an escort of three vehicles insisted on going past their blockade.

The officials engaged themselves in a fierce argument. The military officers also insisted on not allowing them to proceed.

They were eventually forced to turn back after thirty minutes of exchanging words. Other escort vehicles that came afterwards were either turned back or delayed at the spot.

The Ogun State Commandant of FRSC, Ahmed Umar, said the escorts have contributed to the problem faced by road safety officials on that axis.

He said, “They are the ones compounding the problems for us. Everybody complies but they would come and violate it. And sometimes there used to be no one inside the vehicle.

“That is why our officials stand their ground and turn them back. We are also working with the police and other security agencies to continue the enforcement.”
