Nissi, the sister of popular Nigerian singer, Burna Boy, has taken a swipe at his colleague, Davido, for calling her brother a “new cat” in the industry.

It will be recalled that Davido caused a huge stir after he said he and Wizkid paved the way for the global recognition and popularity of Afrobeat music before other artists he referred to as “new cats” got onboard.

He added that Grammy-award winning singer, Burna Boy, and other new-school artistes including Rema, Fireboy, Asake, and Mayorkun, are beneficiaries of the foundation that he and Wizkid laid down in their earlier years.

His words, “Everybody knows now. I was one of the first. I and Wizkid were one of the first young artists to blow up and it feels good seeing new cats like Burna Boy, Rema, Fireboy, Mayorkun, you know a lot of new cats coming, killing it, Asake who was on my album.

“So, yes, I think the future of Afrobeat is in good hands.”

His statement sparked a huge buzz on the internet, triggering a debate about how long Burna Boy has been in the music industry and whether it is appropriate to label him as a “new artiste.”

In an apparent reaction to the ‘new cat’ discourse, Burna Boy’s sister Nissi took to her Instastory to share a video from one of her brother’s sold-out concerts abroad and captioned it, “New cats are facing their hustle.”
