The immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has resigned his membership of the 10th House, following his resumption of duties as Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu.

Gbajabiamila tendered his resignation letter, yesterday, on the floor of the House before the current Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, and other members of the House.

After laying the letter before the House, Abbas, read it out to members.

The former Speaker subsequently took a bow before the new Speaker and other members before walking out of the chamber amid cheers and standing ovation from lawmakers.

During his two-decade law-making career in the House, Gbajabiamila was Minority Leader, Majority Leader and Speaker at various times.

He was re-elected to represent Surulere 1 Federal Constituency in Lagos State before his new appointment, and was sworn in as a member of the House at the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly, on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Abbas has consequently declared Gbajabiamila’s seat vacant.

MEANWHILE, a socio-political organisation, Women Supporting Women For Greater Heights, has appealed to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State to pick a woman, Jamila Omobolanle Mu’azu – Olukosi, as replacement for Gbajabiamila.

The group made the call, yesterday, in the wake of media reports that the Surulere Council Chairman, Fuad Laguda, has been unanimously picked to replace the former Speaker.

In a statement by its Secretary, Ajumoke Martino, the group, while hailing APC as a party that promotes women inclusiveness in partisan politics, called for the nomination of Mu’azu – Olukosi, to represent Surulere Federal Constituency 1.

Mu’asu-Olukosi, who was a member of Contact and Mobilisation Committee for Tinubu-Shettima Women Presidential Campaign Team, has trained more than 100 teenagers and women on vocational skills.

She has provided free healthcare services and cancer treatments to many people, while also rendering support for the party and candidates before and after elections.

Martino said: “Mu’azu- Olukosi has contested four times, paid for nomination forms and mobilised people massively, but was told to step down. She did because of her belief in party supremacy.

“Now that there is an opening, they should consider her interest and unwavering support for the party. Why are some people ganging up to confusion now there is a better chance to realise her dream?”
