Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun has banned tankers and other articulated vehicles from plying flyover bridges in the state.
He gave the ban while assessing damages at scene of tanker explosion in Abeokuta, the state capital.
The governor also vowed that stiffer punishment would be meted out to any tanker found culpable.
According to him, the ban was meant to safeguard lives and properties of the citizens in view of explosions in different part of the state.
The governor confirmed three persons dead in Tuesday’s tanker explosion, while six others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
He said the injured who were badly burnt have been taken to Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi – Aba, and the State Hospital, Ijaye, both in Abeokuta.

Daily Trust had reported earlier that the victims reportedly burnt “beyond recognition” when a fuel-laden tanker on Tuesday morning exploded in Abeokuta, Ogun State

Seven vehicles and five motorcycles were also burnt in the explosion.

The incident occurred along IBB Boulevard, near Guarantee Trust Bank, opposite Lawson Group School, Kuto, Abeokuta.

It was gathered that the driver of the tanker, which was coming from Sagamu-Siun – Oke-Mosan road, climbed the overhead bridge, lost control of the wheels while descending from the bridge.

Eyewitness said the tanker hit a motorcycle, which was on a motion, and rammed into some commercial vehicles waiting for passengers at the end of the bridge.

The tanker immediately went up in flames while other vehicles around caught the fire.

The explosion threw residents and passers-by into panic as many motorists started making a U-turn and headed for alternative routes within the metropolis.

Our correspondent, who was at the scene, observed that bodies of three casualties have been evacuated.

Joint rescue operations comprising Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Police were also at the scene.

Speaking with reporters, the Director of SEMA, Ige Olufolarin said seven vehicles and six motorcycles were burnt while four persons were injured.

“We don’t want conflicting figures.

“Three persons are now confirmed dead. Their bodies have been evacuated,” he said
