Alex Iwobi hotel video sparks debate as NFF clarifies Super Eagles’ Morocco lodging; midfielder says post was misunderstood before World Cup qualifier
Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has addressed the growing controversy surrounding a video he shared that appeared to show substandard lodging ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff match in Morocco.

The clip, which quickly went viral, sparked outrage among fans, many of whom criticised the accommodation as “unbefitting” for a national team.
Some compared the facility to a “school hostel,” igniting a heated online debate about the welfare of Nigerian footballers abroad.
However, Iwobi has clarified that the video was misinterpreted, insisting he made no negative remarks about the hotel.
“I didn’t say anything; I just showed the video,” the Fulham midfielder said, suggesting that his post had been taken out of context.
Reacting to the online backlash, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) dismissed claims that the team was housed in poor conditions, explaining that the Super Eagles are camped at RIVE Hotel in Rabat.
According to the NFF, the viral clip captured the view of an old building visible from a hotel window—not the players’ accommodation.
“RIVE was chosen because of its proximity to the team’s training facility and the stadium here in Rabat,” the federation stated.
The Super Eagles are currently focused on their high-stakes World Cup qualifier against Morocco, while the brief storm over the Alex Iwobi hotel video highlights the risks of viral social media posts—even when no words are spoken.
