100 US military personnel arrive in Bauchi for training support

US military personnel in Bauchi arrive to support Nigerian Armed Forces with training and intelligence under Federal Government approval

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the arrival of about 100 United States military personnel at Bauchi Airfield to support the Armed Forces of Nigeria with training, technical assistance and intelligence cooperation.

The development was announced on Monday by the Defence Headquarters.

In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the deployment was described as part of ongoing Nigeria–United States defence collaboration following recent engagements between military delegations of both countries.

According to the Defence Headquarters, the presence of the US military personnel in Bauchi followed a formal request by the Federal Government to address specific training requirements.

“The arrival of the US personnel is planned and deliberate, based on a formal request by the Federal Government of Nigeria for support in addressing clearly defined military training needs,” the statement said.

The military high command explained that the partnership aims to enhance Nigeria’s access to specialised technical capabilities.

The objective, Major General Uba said, is to strengthen efforts to deter terrorist threats and protect vulnerable communities.

Major General Uba clarified that the US contingent comprises technical specialists operating strictly in advisory and training roles. The personnel are not combat troops.

Major General Uba stressed that all activities will be conducted under the authority and direction of the Nigerian government, in close coordination with the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

The Defence Headquarters added that Nigerian troops and the US advisers will undertake joint training exercises and intelligence-focused cooperation initiatives.

The exercises are designed to improve the capacity of security forces to identify, counter and neutralise extremist groups.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain fully committed to degrading and defeating terrorist organisations that threaten the country’s sovereignty, national security, and the safety of its citizens,” the statement added.

The deployment of US military personnel in Bauchi underscores deepening defence ties between Nigeria and the United States as both countries intensify efforts to combat terrorism and reinforce national security.
