A coalition of civil society organizations called the Community Advancement and Humanitarian Empowerment Initiative in Nigeria (CSCHEI) has made public its strategic objectives to carefully monitor and assess the implementation of the N28.777 trillion Appropriation Expenditure for the 2024 fiscal year. The objective of this endeavor is to guarantee openness, responsibility, and efficient application of financial allocations.

The Appropriation bill, passed by the National Assembly and signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on January 1, 2024, has prompted CSCHEI to take proactive steps in overseeing the government’s spending. The Director General of the Institutional Alliance, Hon Kunle Yussuf, emphasized the crucial role of Civil Society Organizations as watchdogs for both citizens and the government.

Yussuf, in a statement released in Abuja, asserted, “Budget control mechanisms are the processes of managing, monitoring, and adjusting cash flow to ensure both human development and infrastructural development tracking. Civil Society Organizations need to work with the Government to ensure transparency and accountability for the enhancement of Social Economic Development Indicators, Gross Domestic Products (GDP), Life Expectancy, Literacy, Levels of Employment, Environmental Sustainability, Basic and Secondary Education, and Social Dignity in our country.”

The CSCHEI director expressed the organization’s commitment to collaborating with relevant federal government establishments to achieve effective monitoring and evaluation. He stressed the importance of judicious spending, emphasizing that every budgetary provision must be spent wisely.

“In 2024, we are prepared to work with the desk officer of Mr. President on Monitoring and Evaluation, Sustainable Development Goals, National Assembly Committees on Public Accounts, and Bureau of Public Procurement to achieve desirable goals,” Yussuf declared.

CSCHEI outlined its agenda for engagement with various government bodies, including the Director General of Budget, to seek clarification on budgetary allocations. The organization applauded the appointment of a seasoned administrator as Chief of Staff and pledged to establish a standing committee to oversee bidding processes, project awarding documentation, and project implementation to completion and handover.
