The feature, part of the latest update to Chrome for Android, introduces a more flexible layout that acknowledges mobile browsing habits—especially for users who prefer easier access to navigation tools near their thumbs.
To activate it, users can either long-press the address bar and select “Move address bar to bottom” or navigate to the Settings menu to toggle the bar’s position manually.
“One address bar position may feel more comfortable than the other. We designed this update to give you the flexibility to choose your preferred location so you can browse with more ease,” Google stated.
This user-controlled feature avoids the backlash Apple faced in 2021 when Safari introduced a similar interface redesign in iOS 15.
Apple initially positioned the floating address bar over page content, prompting complaints from users who found it obstructive and difficult to use.
We designed this update to give you the flexibility to choose your preferred location so you can browse with more ease.
The criticism led Apple to revise the design, eventually moving the bar below the content and offering the layout as an optional setting.
Google has taken a more cautious and user-friendly route, opting not to enforce the change but instead allowing Android users to tailor their browsing experience to their individual preferences.
This new setting, already available to Chrome users on iOS, is now rolling out more broadly on Android devices.
The update continues Google’s trend of prioritising usability and personalisation, as mobile browsing remains the dominant method for accessing the web globally.
