“We did not kill him” — Covenant University reacts to student’s death

Covenant University confirms the sudden death of a student during football training after a medical emergency at the campus medical centre

According to a statement from the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Timothy A. Anake, the student reportedly complained of leg pain and fatigue during training before stepping aside to rest.

Shortly after, he was observed gasping for breath and was immediately rushed to the university’s Medical Centre located near the sports field.

Despite swift medical intervention, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), he was sadly certified clinically dead upon arrival due to an undisclosed prior heart condition.

The university management stated that there was no negligence in the response of medical personnel and confirmed that all necessary emergency equipment was available and promptly used.

Prof. Anake expressed condolences to the bereaved family, noting that the university community deeply mourns the loss of a promising student.

He added that university officials remained with the family throughout the tragic incident and burial process.
