CUPP Slams APC Over 2027 Presidential race deception

Opposition says APC’s “open contest” claim is misleading and exploitative

CUPP slams APC over 2027 presidential race, calling the open contest a deceptive move despite Tinubu’s endorsement and questioning its democratic integrity

The criticism came from the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) following recent comments by Sulaiman Argungu, the APC National Organising Secretary, who said on Wednesday that the party would not bar any member from contesting against President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

“We never said we had locked the door,” Argungu told journalists in Abuja. “Anybody who wants to aspire for the presidency under the APC will not be denied the opportunity to purchase the expression of interest and nomination forms.”

However, CUPP’s National Secretary, Mr. Peter Ameh, swiftly dismissed the statement as “a calculated attempt to mislead”.

“The public endorsement of President Tinubu by recognised party organs effectively signals that the outcome of the APC presidential primary is predetermined,” Ameh said in an exclusive interview on Friday.

“Such actions cast doubt on the fairness and transparency of the party’s primary process, as the endorsement creates a significant bias in favour of the incumbent.”

CUPP slams APC over 2027 presidential race not just on grounds of internal politics but also democratic integrity. Ameh accused the ruling party of inviting other aspirants under false pretenses, solely to profit from their purchase of costly nomination forms.

“This approach undermines democracy and portrays the APC as prioritising revenue generation over fostering a level playing field,” he added.
“It erodes public trust and raises serious questions about the party’s commitment to democratic values.”

Ameh argued that true democracy requires transparency, fairness, and accountability, all of which he claims are being compromised in the APC’s current political strategy.

His remarks add to a growing narrative of skepticism surrounding the 2027 presidential election, with critics questioning the sincerity of internal party processes and the future of competitive politics in Nigeria.

As political activity ramps up in the months ahead, CUPP slams APC over 2027 presidential race may mark one of many confrontations between opposition forces and the ruling party over the credibility of Nigeria’s democratic system.
