Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East Senatorial District and former Governor of Ogun State, has expressed profound sadness over the death of Dr Samson Dotun Oladipo, publisher of The Eagle Online and veteran journalist, following his death in Lagos on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the age of 56.

In a condolence message to the Oladipo family, Daniel described the late journalist as a distinguished professional whose career was marked by intellect, courage, generosity and an enduring commitment to the development of journalism in Nigeria.

Oladipo’s death has triggered an outpouring of tributes across Nigeria’s media industry.

The Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, which Oladipo led as president from 2017 to 2021, described his passing as a loss to the organisation and the wider media community.

Daniel recalled Oladipo’s years at the defunct Compass Newspaper, where he progressed through editorial and managerial responsibilities before becoming Editor of Sunday Compass.

Daniel said Oladipo distinguished himself through professionalism and an unwavering dedication to journalism.

Oladipo’s professional journey extended well beyond Compass. Reports from multiple media organisations show that his career spanned more than 28 years and included work with Nigerian Tribune, The PUNCH, Nigerian Compass and The Sun before he established The Eagle Online.

The Nigerian Guild of Editors also paid tribute to Oladipo, describing him as a gentleman, distinguished journalist, former newspaper editor and publisher whose career reflected professionalism, courage and intellectual depth.

Daniel said Oladipo’s passion was never limited to personal advancement.

According to the former governor, the journalist remained committed to strengthening the profession and promoting the wider role of the media in society.

That commitment was particularly evident during Oladipo’s tenure as GOCOP president.

The guild said he helped shape the organisation during its formative years, bringing experience from traditional newsrooms into an emerging digital publishing environment.

GOCOP President Danlami Nmodu described Oladipo’s contribution as important to the development of online publishing in Nigeria.

“Dotun played an important role in the development of GOCOP,” Nmodu said, noting that Oladipo led the guild during a period when considerable work was required to establish online publishers as an important part of the media landscape.

Oladipo also played a role in professional media organisations beyond GOCOP.

The International Press Institute, Nigeria chapter, described him as a dependable, resourceful and committed journalist and press freedom advocate.

The circumstances of his death added to the shock within the profession.

Reports said Oladipo suddenly took ill at his office in Lagos on August 25 and was taken to hospital, where he died hours later. His death was subsequently confirmed by GOCOP leadership.

The Association of Mass Communication Graduates ’92 Set of Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta, where Oladipo obtained his Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication in 1992, also mourned him.

The association remembered him not only for his journalism but also for his warmth, energy and commitment to supporting colleagues and members.

President Bola Tinubu has similarly described Oladipo’s death as a painful loss to Nigeria’s media industry and democratic development, highlighting his contribution to political journalism and the evolution of digital media.

For Daniel, however, the loss is also deeply personal in its human dimension.

His condolence message focused on the character behind the professional achievements, remembering Oladipo as a man of ideas and uncommon generosity whose presence touched colleagues and friends beyond the newsroom.

“On behalf of myself, my family and associates, I extend my deepest condolences to the entire Oladipo family,” Daniel said.

The senator prayed for strength and comfort for Oladipo’s family and for the eternal repose of the late journalist’s soul.

Oladipo leaves behind a significant professional record at a time when Nigerian journalism has undergone a profound transformation from traditional print publishing to an increasingly digital media environment.

His career bridged both eras, giving him a distinctive place in the evolution of the country’s news industry.

As tributes continue to emerge from political leaders, editors, publishers and former colleagues, the common thread remains clear: Oladipo was remembered not simply for the positions he occupied, but for the professionalism, humanity and service he brought to them.
