Lagos viral hepatitis training

Lagos State launches a four-day training for medical officers to enhance viral hepatitis management, aiming for better healthcare outcomes.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Lagos State Government has initiated a four-day residential training programme aimed at equipping medical officers in secondary health facilities with the skills and knowledge required to improve the management of viral hepatitis cases.

Organised by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Saving One Million Lives Programme for Results (SOMLPforR), the training commenced on Monday, 25 November 2024, at Orchid Hotel, Lekki.

In her welcome address, Dr. Victoria Egunjobi, Director of Disease Control at the Lagos State Ministry of Health, emphasised the public health importance of the initiative.

“This training will equip medical officers with adequate knowledge and skills to manage patients with viral hepatitis in general hospitals across Lagos State,” Dr. Egunjobi said.

Scheduled to conclude on Thursday, 28 November 2024, the programme is part of Lagos State’s broader commitment to strengthening its healthcare system and achieving sustainable health outcomes.

It also sets the stage for future training sessions involving laboratory scientists and other healthcare professionals.

“We are a responsible government, and this training is a testament to our commitment to improving healthcare delivery,” she added, reiterating the government’s dedication to ensuring quality healthcare access for all residents.

During her opening remarks, Dr. Mazeedat Erinosho, Coordinator of SOMLPforR, highlighted the importance of addressing the knowledge gap among healthcare workers regarding viral hepatitis.

“Many healthcare workers, including doctors, lack sufficient knowledge about viral hepatitis, and this training is a step toward bridging that gap,” Dr. Erinosho stated.

Viral hepatitis, a highly infectious disease, continues to pose significant public health challenges globally and in Nigeria.

The training programme is expected to improve diagnosis, patient management, and overall healthcare delivery in Lagos State.

This initiative reflects the Lagos State Government’s proactive approach to public health challenges, particularly in combating infectious diseases.

With additional training sessions planned for laboratory scientists and other healthcare personnel, the state is positioning itself as a model for comprehensive healthcare improvement.

Lagosians can look forward to enhanced healthcare services, as the government continues its strides towards a more robust and sustainable health system.
