Ousmane Dembele scores three first-half goals as France overwhelm Norway to book a place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage
France produced a devastating first-half performance to defeat Norway 4-1 on Friday, with Ousmane Dembele scoring a superb hat-trick to send Les Bleus into the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup in commanding style.
The French forward delivered a clinical display at the Group I encounter, striking three times inside the opening 32 minutes as Didier Deschamps’ side overwhelmed their opponents and strengthened their credentials as one of the tournament favourites.
France wasted little time asserting their dominance, taking the lead in the seventh minute when captain Kylian Mbappe released Dembele, who calmly finished past the Norwegian goalkeeper.
Dembele doubled the advantage in the 20th minute after another incisive move involving Mbappe, giving France complete control of the contest.
Norway responded almost immediately through Thelo Aasgaard, who reduced the deficit in the 21st minute after a well-worked move created by Andreas Schjelderup.
Any hopes of a Norwegian comeback were quickly extinguished as Dembele completed a brilliant hat-trick in the 32nd minute.
Aurélien Tchouaméni delivered a defence-splitting pass that sent the winger through on goal, and Dembele finished with confidence to restore France’s two-goal cushion.
France maintained their intensity after the interval and continued to dominate possession while creating several clear scoring opportunities.
Norway were handed a lifeline in the 49th minute after winning a penalty, but Jørgen Larsen failed to capitalise as goalkeeper Mike Maignan produced a comfortable save to preserve France’s commanding lead.
Mbappe, Désiré Doué and Bradley Barcola continued to trouble the Norwegian defence with their movement and attacking combinations as France searched for a fourth goal.
The pressure eventually paid off deep into stoppage time when Doué rose above the defence to head home Barcola’s inviting cross, completing an emphatic victory.
Speaking after another impressive display, France manager Didier Deschamps praised his side’s attacking efficiency and composure throughout the contest.
The victory secured maximum points for France and confirmed their place in the knockout rounds, with the team’s blend of attacking quality, defensive discipline and tactical organisation reinforcing expectations that Les Bleus will remain among the leading contenders for the FIFA World Cup title.
Dembele’s first international hat-trick was the standout moment of the evening, while Mbappe’s two assists and France’s fluid attacking football highlighted the depth and quality within Deschamps’ squad as the tournament moves into its decisive stages.
