Destiny Boy death under investigation as Ogun police arrest a suspect and transfer the case to the homicide unit for a full probe

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed on Monday that one suspect has been taken into custody over the death of popular Nigerian singer Afeez Adeshina, widely known as Destiny Boy, as detectives launched a comprehensive homicide investigation.

The police said the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Homicide Section, for an in depth probe into the circumstances surrounding the death of the 22 year old artiste.

In a statement, the command said investigations had commenced and that the suspect is currently being detained while detectives continue to gather evidence and statements connected to the incident.

News of the Destiny Boy death broke on Sunday after distressing videos showing the singer’s lifeless body being conveyed to a mortuary circulated widely on social media, prompting grief among fans and intense speculation about the cause of death.

One of the videos showed the late musician laid in the back of a vehicle, with cotton wool placed in his ears and nostrils, images that further fuelled public concern and rumour.

Amid the growing speculation, an associate of the singer released a separate video seeking to calm tensions, saying Destiny Boy had been battling an undisclosed medical condition prior to his death.

The associate said efforts had been made to support the singer medically but added that the condition proved fatal, urging the public to refrain from spreading unverified claims.

Destiny Boy rose to prominence for blending Fuji music with contemporary sounds, carving out a distinctive style that resonated strongly with young audiences.

He began his career at T2 Boys Studios in Agege, Lagos, where he worked as a backup dancer for veteran Fuji musician Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, before transitioning fully into music.

The singer gained widespread attention in 2019 after releasing a Fuji inspired cover of Davido’s hit song If, which went viral online and opened the door to further recognition.

He later recorded covers of tracks by artistes including Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice and Small Doctor.

In his personal life, Destiny Boy became a father in November 2024, when he welcomed his first child with his partner, Iremide.

The Ogun State Police Command said further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses, assuring the public that the matter is being treated with urgency and seriousness.
