Born on January 19, 1946, in a two-room log cabin near the Little Pigeon River in Tennessee, Parton was the fourth of 12 children.
Her father, a sharecropper who later owned a small tobacco farm, struggled financially to support the large family.
Parton frequently recalled her childhood as one of extreme poverty, but she also credited her parents with giving her the foundations that shaped her life.
Her mother passed on traditional folk music and storytelling, while her father instilled a strong work ethic.
