Lagos Chief Judge Kazeem Alogba says Africa will reunite, as ECOWAS Court begins sensitisation in Lagos following regional tensions

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Chief Judge of Lagos State, Honourable Justice Kazeem Alogba, has expressed confidence in the unity of Africa despite recent withdrawals from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the ECOWAS Court of Justice delegation to the Lagos State Judiciary Complex in Osborne, Justice Alogba described the exit of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from ECOWAS as a temporary setback caused by shifting global political dynamics.

“I believe it is a temporary setback; we’re Africans… over time, we’ll always get back together.”

“There is always strength in unity. And you heard the president when he lamented the fact that some states had just exited ECOWAS, which I agreed with him. I believe it is a temporary setback; we’re Africans.

“I think what has happened is just the reality of the current shift or alignment in world politics. So naturally over time, Africans will always get back to together and be one again,” Alogba remarked while receiving the high-level ECOWAS delegation.

The visit came just months after the three Sahel nations formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and officially exited ECOWAS on January 29, 2025.

The ECOWAS Court delegation was led by its President, Hon. Justice Ricardo Goncalves, and Vice President, Hon. Justice Sengu Koroma.

Justice Goncalves praised the Lagos judiciary for its warm hospitality, saying it was a promising start to their official engagements in Nigeria.

Hon. Justice Koroma, in an interview with Freelanews, said, “We’re starting with a sensitisation programme to inform Nigerians of the existence of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, after which we hold our open court sessions.”

The sensitisation drive aims to enhance awareness of the court’s functions and reinforce the spirit of regional integration amid rising political shifts in West Africa.
