Egypt World Cup win ends a 92-year wait as Mohamed Salah inspires a 3-1 comeback victory over New Zealand in Vancouver

Egypt captain Mohamed Salah inspired a historic comeback as the Pharaohs secured their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory, defeating New Zealand national football team 3-1 and moving to the brink of a place in the knockout rounds.

The landmark Egypt World Cup Win came during the nation’s fourth appearance at football’s biggest tournament and ended a 92-year wait for success on the global stage after Egypt’s World Cup debut in 1934.

New Zealand made the brighter start and stunned the North Africans in the 15th minute when defender Finn Surman powered home a header from a corner delivered by Tim Payne.

The goal raised hopes of a first World Cup victory for the All Whites, who had also surrendered a lead in their opening draw against Iran.

Egypt, however, emerged from the interval with renewed purpose and intensity. The equaliser arrived in the 58th minute when Mostafa Zico rose highest to meet a cross from Mohamed Hany and head past the New Zealand goalkeeper.

The momentum shifted decisively nine minutes later as Salah delivered another decisive moment in an international career filled with memorable performances.

The Liverpool forward combined brilliantly with Zico inside the penalty area before calmly placing his finish into the bottom corner to give Egypt a 2-1 advantage.

The victory was sealed in the 82nd minute through another contribution from Salah. The captain’s corner found substitute Trezeguet, who headed home Egypt’s third goal to complete a powerful second-half turnaround.

The result lifted Egypt, coached by Hossam Hassan, to the top of Group G and placed the team in a strong position ahead of its final group-stage encounter against Iran.

A victory in that match would secure first place in the group and guarantee progression to the last 32, potentially setting up another historic milestone for Egyptian football.

For New Zealand, the defeat leaves qualification hopes hanging by a thread. The All Whites must now defeat Belgium in their final group fixture to keep alive hopes of advancing beyond the group stage.

Salah’s influential display once again underlined his importance to Egypt’s ambitions. The 34-year-old contributed a goal and an assist, producing the kind of decisive leadership that supporters have come to expect from the country’s most celebrated footballer.

Beyond the three points, the Egypt World Cup Win carries significant historical importance. Egypt had previously participated in World Cups without recording a victory, making the triumph one of the most memorable moments in the nation’s football history.

With confidence growing and knockout qualification now within reach, Egypt’s dream of reaching the latter stages of the tournament remains very much alive.
