Veteran Yoruba broadcaster and comedian Ereke Ni Shop, real name Timothy Agboola, has died in Lagos after a prolonged illness

Veteran Yoruba broadcaster, comic actor and presenter Timothy Agboola, popularly known as Ereke Ni Shop, has died.

The respected entertainer reportedly passed away on Wednesday at a private hospital in Lagos after battling a prolonged illness.

Agboola was widely recognised for his contributions to Yoruba broadcasting, comedy and cultural promotion. Over the years, he earned admiration as a passionate cultural ambassador and a promoter of Yoruba people traditions, particularly those of the Ijesa community.

News of his death was announced by one of his associates, Idris Shogbola, who paid tribute to the late broadcaster in a social media post.

“May the soul of our boss rest in peace. Pa Timothy Agboola ‘Ereke ni Shop’. Baba Oloye Repete… A broadcaster, actor, comedian. May God Almighty give you eternal rest in peace,” he wrote.

Agboola gained popularity through his unique storytelling style and humorous commentary, which often reflected Yoruba culture and everyday social experiences.

During his long career, he collaborated with notable entertainers including Baba Alajeju, with some of their comedic works dating back to the 1970s.

He was also widely regarded as a protégé of late Yoruba comedy legend Gbenga Adeboye, also known as Funwontan. After Adeboye’s death, Agboola became one of the figures who helped sustain the distinctive Yoruba variety entertainment style popularised by the comedian.

The veteran entertainer was also known for his work as a presenter on Faaji 106.5FM and appeared in several Yoruba films, often portraying witty and humorous characters.
