California-born actor Eric Dane, best known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has died at the age of 53 following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

The actor had publicly disclosed in 2025 that he was living with ALS, the most common form of motor neurone disease, a progressive condition affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
Prior to his death, he had been actively raising awareness about the illness.
His family confirmed that he passed away on Thursday afternoon after what they described as a courageous fight. He was surrounded by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia.
The family described his children as the centre of his world and expressed gratitude to fans for their continued love and support.
Dane first gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Dr Mark Sloan, fondly known as “Dr McSteamy”, on Grey’s Anatomy, where he became a fan favourite on the long-running medical drama.
He later took on darker roles, including Cal Jacobs in Euphoria.
Throughout his career, he also appeared in television series such as Charmed and The Last Ship, as well as films including Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day and Burlesque.
Following news of his passing, tributes poured in from colleagues. Actress Kim Raver praised his playful spirit and sharp comedic timing, while actor Kevin McKidd shared a brief farewell message.

Euphoria creator Sam Levinson described working with Dane as an honour and called his friendship a gift.
Dane leaves behind a legacy of memorable television roles and a career spanning more than three decades.
