FG approves Air Peace flights to evacuate Nigerians from South Africa

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that more than 500 Nigerians have already been screened and cleared for repatriation under the government’s emergency support programme.

According to officials, the first flight is expected to depart Johannesburg with about 270 passengers once final aviation and regulatory clearances are secured.

The government stressed that the evacuation exercise is voluntary and intended to provide assistance to Nigerians who feel unsafe or wish to return home due to the recent unrest.

Officials said the operation forms part of broader consular efforts to safeguard Nigerian citizens living abroad and ensure their welfare during periods of crisis.

The latest intervention comes amid growing concerns over reports of renewed xenophobic incidents in some South African communities, raising fears among foreign nationals, including Nigerians.

Authorities assured affected citizens that support would continue throughout the repatriation process, with measures in place to facilitate a smooth return for those who choose to participate.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also indicated that additional details regarding flight schedules, passenger arrangements and logistical procedures would be communicated as the evacuation operation progresses.

Air Peace has previously partnered with the Federal Government on similar humanitarian and evacuation missions involving Nigerians in distress abroad.
