Hands Off Africa: Peter Obi praises Adichie as Pope Francis releases new book

The presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi, has praised the literary giant, Chimamanda Adichie, over a new book written by Pope Francis.

The book, Hands Off Africa, which was prefaced by Adichie, condemns the continuing exploitation of Africa by Western powers, and has been described by the award-winning author as a beacon of hope for Congo and Africa at large.

In his opinion, Obi believed the release of the book was timely because it touches on a very critical point of discontinuing the exploitation of Africa by the Western powers.

“I am glad to see the release of the new book, “Hands Off Africa”, written by Pope Francis and prefaced by our literary ambassador and global author – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

“The book whose release is timely, touches on a very critical point of discontinuing the exploitation of Africa by the Western powers. As Pope Francis suggests, “May Africa be the protagonist of its own destiny!”.

“I have consistently called on Nigerians to take back their country because only Nigerians can save Nigeria. This is the only nation that we have, and it is ours to build and develop.

“When I rejected the dual citizenship of other countries years back, I was conscious that Nigeria as the only country that I have will need my full attention and commitment in the years to come.

“I remain committed to the progress of our nation, Nigeria, and to her continued constructive role in Africa,” Obi said.

Announcing the book’s release, The Vatican Publishing House said the book, written in Italian, compiles all of the Pope’s speeches during his trip to conflict-ridden DR Congo and South Sudan in January/February 2023.

“It also contains the voices of those he met during the journey,” the publisher added.

Pope Francis sparked global conversations on the first day of his visit to DRC when he said: “Hands off Africa! Stop choking Africa; it is not a mine to be exploited or a land to be plundered. May Africa be the protagonist of its own destiny.”

The head of the global Catholic church and Bishop of Rome regularly advocates for world peace.
