The Matori Grammar School (MGS) Old Students Association, 95/96 set, held its reunion party on January 3, 2022 in the school premises.

25years after leaving secondary school, the old classmates got together at the school main hall to appreciate one another and discuss the progress of their alma mater, kicking off the event with redcarpet interviews and interaction with the media at 11:00am while the main event started by 12 noon.

The event, which was exclusively covered by Freelanews, was anchored by two of the classmates, Macaulay Julius and Stella Awotunsin.

After the renditions of the national and school anthems, the comperes introduced other members and guests after which a minute silence was observed in honour of their departed colleagues.

The opening speech was delivered by the chairman of the planning committee, Ganiu Ayanbisi, while the goodwill message was read by the vice principal of MGS, Opeoluwa Olatunji.

The first set of awards was presented by one of their past senior, Hon. Rasheed Ajose, while Alhaji Engr Adebayo Subair (the national president) presented ‘Long Service Award’ to one of the serving teacher. Olubunmi Adekoya received an award for her valuable contributions and loyalty service in their successes, while Alhaji Ayanbisi (Mefa Loje) bagged the Long Service Award. Other categories include Award of Excellence, which was presented to Taofeek Olawale Kazeem aka (Master) for his valuable contribution in their lives and same category also went to Funmilayo Oketunbi, principal, MGS.

Hon. Bayo Olasoju led the second set of awards presentation, where members where honoured.

Most Consistent on the Old Student Association platform award went to Lanre Babalola, Most Supportive Member of the year (Male) – Funmi Kadiri, Most Supportive Member of the year (Female)- Busayo Soremekun Daniels, Most Outstanding Supportive Member of the year – Hon. Prince Daniel Olusegun Oduse and Appreciation of Commitment to the association was given to Olasukanmi Kalejaiye.

Hall of Fame Award was given to Matori Grammar School which was presented by one of the Senior Past Student named Fidelix.

A congratulatory letter and self portrait were presented to Hon. Bayo Olasoju for his appointment as the chairman of Isolo Local Government from the management of MGS.

Hon. Daniel Oduse revealed that the funds raised by members were used in establishment of a business for male and female colleagues, provision of pipe borne water for school and which was commissioned by Adesanjo.

Other projects carried out by the association in giving back to the school that shaped them included refurbishment of the principal’s office, purchase of generator and 24 plastic chairs, which were presented during the event by Hon. Oduse and Busayo Soremekun

The event was fun as Hon. Oduse took all the old students down memory lane by relating an incident most old students remembered. He narrated how the students will go to their teacher, Taofeek Olawale Kazeem, aka Master’s poultry to steal his eggs. The old students then apologised to their teacher, thanking him for his sacrifices. The MC also reminded Ayanbisi how he used to flog ‘the hell out of him’ even when he didn’t offend him.

The event came to a happy end after the cutting of the anniversary cake and refreshments were served, while Busayo Soremekun, who was the Head Girl during their secondary school days, gave the vote of thanks.
