He made this announcement during an interview on AriseTV, which was monitored by Freelanews on Thursday, July 4, 2024, while addressing the pressing issues of flash floods that have plagued Lagos due to the rainy season.
He also revealed the extensive efforts the government is undertaking to combat this natural menace.
However, the commissioner emphasised that the fight against flooding and environmental degradation cannot be won by the government alone. He encouraged the populace to join in these efforts by refraining from and discouraging the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in gutters or flood waters.
“Environmental protection is a collective responsibility,” said Barr. Wahab. “We need every Lagosian to understand that their actions have a direct impact on our environment. By taking ownership and reporting harmful activities, we can ensure a safer and cleaner Lagos for all.”
He also clarified recent reports regarding arrests made in the wake of the floods.
The commissioner stated that individuals ferrying people across floodwaters and charging a fee are not being arrested. However, those who are charging a fee for Lagosians to use pedestrian bridges have been apprehended.
This distinction highlights the government’s commitment to maintaining order and safety without penalising necessary services during emergencies.
