Spain’s teenage star becomes the first player under 20 to win both the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup

Spain forward Lamine Yamal has etched his name into football history after becoming the first player under the age of 20 to win both the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup, following Spain’s triumph at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 19-year-old Barcelona star reached the landmark on Sunday as Spain defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the World Cup final at the New York New Jersey Stadium, securing La Roja’s second world title and their first since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010.

According to FIFA, Yamal is the youngest footballer to complete the remarkable international double, further underlining a rise that has transformed him into one of the sport’s brightest talents before his 20th birthday.

The winger was instrumental throughout Spain’s victorious campaign, delivering influential performances with goals, assists and creative displays as Luis de la Fuente’s side combined defensive discipline with attacking flair to conquer the world.

After Spain’s victory over Argentina, an emotional moment also unfolded on the pitch when Yamal embraced Argentina captain Lionel Messi, bringing full circle a story that began with a famous photograph of Messi holding Yamal as a baby during a UNICEF charity event in 2007.
