Super Falcons’ WAFCON heartbreak: Madugu accepts blame

thenacre-campaign

Justine Madugu, head coach of Nigeria’s Super Falcons, apologised to Nigerians on August 14, 2026, after Nigeria’s 2-1 defeat to Cameroon at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations ended the team’s hopes of reaching the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The defeat proved particularly painful for the 10-time African champions, who were eliminated in the quarter-finals and subsequently missed out on a place in the inter-confederation play-offs.

The outcome means Nigeria will not feature at the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time since the tournament began in 1991, bringing an unwanted end to the country’s remarkable record of participation.

Madugu accepted responsibility for the disappointing campaign and apologised to supporters who had expected the Super Falcons to progress further.

“First of all, I have to apologise to Nigerians over our inability to make it to the World Cup. It was not our intention,” Madugu told reporters.

“We came and did the best that we could, but our best was not good enough. We are very sorry for that, and we take full responsibility for everything that happened.”

The result has placed Madugu under intense scrutiny, with calls emerging for the Nigeria Football Federation to consider his position following the team’s disappointing tournament.

Madugu, however, said he was not allowing speculation over his future to distract from his responsibility to the national team.

“I am not afraid of being sacked. To the glory of God, I have served my country. It was a privilege that was given to me,” he said.

Madugu also pointed to his overall record in charge, saying he had overseen almost 28 matches, recording 19 victories, four defeats and four draws before the latest setback.

“So far, I have played almost 28 games, won 19, lost four and drawn four. But this defeat came at crucial moments that people did not expect,” he added.

The Cameroon defeat carries consequences beyond the WAFCON campaign.

Nigeria’s failure to reach the World Cup represents a significant setback for a team that has traditionally been one of Africa’s strongest forces in women’s football.

The Super Falcons entered the tournament with considerable expectations, having won the continental title on 10 occasions.

Their pedigree made the early exit particularly difficult for supporters and intensified questions over the team’s preparation, performance and direction.

The loss also ended Nigeria’s unbroken appearance record at the Women’s World Cup.

The Super Falcons had participated in every edition since the inaugural tournament in 1991.

For Madugu, the immediate challenge is likely to be determining what went wrong during a campaign that ended at a critical stage and left Nigeria outside the global tournament for the first time.

The coach’s willingness to accept responsibility may offer some reassurance to supporters, but the strength of the reaction to the result means the Nigerian football authorities could face difficult decisions over the team’s next phase.

The Super Falcons now have an important rebuilding task ahead.

Beyond replacing an experienced generation of players, Nigeria will need to develop a clear pathway for emerging talent while restoring confidence around a national team accustomed to competing on the biggest stage.

For a side with such a powerful continental legacy, the World Cup absence will be remembered as a painful chapter. The response to that setback could ultimately determine whether the defeat becomes a temporary stumble or the beginning of a deeper period of rebuilding.
