The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander, Sector 3, Operation FANSAN YAMA, Maj Gen Chinedu Nnebeife, personally led troops during the daring mission on Thursday.
According to the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 2 Division, Lt Col Polycarp Okoye, the GOC’s team advanced into Babasango Forest during an operational visit to Patrol Base Babanla, where they successfully freed the captives.
Lt Col Okoye confirmed that the rescued victims were later handed over to Oba Pius Oluwole Onidofin, the traditional ruler of Ayekale in Idofin Odoeshe, following the operation.
The visit came in the wake of a recent bandit attack near Idofin, in Omu-Aran Local Government Area, where three traders were tragically killed at Olegbede village.
Expressing concern over the recurrent attacks, Oba Oluwole attributed the violence to the area’s proximity to Babasango Forest and appealed for a sustained military presence to ensure lasting peace.
In his response, Maj Gen Nnebeife commiserated with the monarch and reassured residents that the Nigerian Army would intensify ongoing clearance operations aimed at flushing out bandits and restoring security to the affected communities.
The GOC’s direct involvement in the field highlights the Army’s renewed commitment to confronting insecurity head-on and restoring public confidence.
Kwara State has faced repeated attacks by armed bandits in recent months. In late September, gunmen stormed Oke-Ode community in Ifelodun Local Government Area, killing no fewer than 15 vigilantes and hunters, forcing many residents to flee the area.
