Makinde declares 2027 presidential bid in bold move

Seyi Makinde enters 2027 race under APM in a major political shift following alliance talks with PDP factions ahead of the general elections

Seyi Makinde, Governor of Oyo State, on Saturday declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement during a rally held at Mapo Hall.

The announcement marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Governor Makinde made the declaration in the presence of political stakeholders and supporters, signalling what he described as a new phase in his national political journey.

“I, Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, Excellency, announce my candidacy for the position of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he stated.

The development comes amid ongoing realignments within factions of the Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State, where strategic alliances have been forming ahead of the polls.

Makinde has also led the Taminu Turaki faction of the PDP in Oyo State into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Allied Peoples Movement, a move aimed at consolidating electoral strength across key positions.

Under the agreement, candidates aligned with the faction are expected to contest governorship, National Assembly, and state assembly seats on the APM platform rather than the PDP in 2027.

The alliance is widely seen as a strategic political recalibration that could reshape party dynamics in the South West region.
