Mountain Top Chorale, the choir affiliated with Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, won gold in the C14 Spiritual category of the 14th World Choir Games in Helsingborg, Sweden, on Monday, August 10, 2026, giving Nigeria a notable victory at one of the world’s biggest international choral competitions.

The Lagos-based choir, conducted by Oluwasegun Okedunmola, was recognised during the Champions Competition at the 2026 World Choir Games, which began in Helsingborg on August 6 and runs until August 16.

INTERKULTUR, the organisation behind the World Choir Games, describes the event as the world’s largest international choir competition.

The 2026 edition is bringing the global choral community to Sweden for the first time, with competitions, concerts, workshops and cultural exchanges taking place across Helsingborg.

The organisers have divided the competitive programme into 19 categories, covering areas including sacred music, gospel, spiritual music, contemporary music, pop and folklore. C14 is specifically designated as Spiritual, while C15 covers Gospel.

Mountain Top Chorale’s success comes after years of appearances at major international choral events and adds another significant chapter to the choir’s competitive record.

The achievement was celebrated by Daniel Olukoya, General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, who praised the singers and described the result as “A CHAMPION’S SOUND! GOLD FOR MOUNTAIN TOP CHORALE!”

Olukoya said the choir had secured gold with an 87.38-point score in the Spiritual category and also emerged champion of the Champions Competition, according to his celebration of the result.

He described the victory as more than a musical accomplishment, linking it to discipline, dedication, teamwork and the use of musical talent in Christian worship.

For the choristers, the result is the latest reward from an international journey that has already taken Mountain Top Chorale to several major competitions.

INTERKULTUR records show that the choir was established in Lagos in 2013, initially developing from a small chamber group.

The organisation previously highlighted the ensemble’s interest in sacred music, Nigerian and African compositions and spirituals rooted in the country’s musical heritage.

That history has translated into a sustained presence at the World Choir Games. Mountain Top Chorale competed at the 2016 Games in Sochi, Russia, and has subsequently appeared at other major INTERKULTUR competitions.

The choir’s previous results also provide useful context for Monday’s victory.

At the 2024 World Choir Games in Auckland, New Zealand, Mountain Top Chorale won gold in both the C19 Contemporary Music, Mixed Voices category and the C22 Spiritual category. The official results recorded 88.13 points in C19 and 83.38 points in C22.

That 2024 performance was itself a continuation of an established record. INTERKULTUR has previously documented the choir’s appearances at competitions in Germany, Austria, Russia and South Africa, including a Golden Diploma at the 2015 International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition in Wernigerode.

The 2026 victory is therefore not an isolated breakthrough but the latest result in a decade-long international competitive journey.

It also carries significance for Nigerian choral music. Mountain Top Chorale has repeatedly used international competitions to present Nigerian and African musical traditions alongside established Western choral repertoire, giving its performances a cultural dimension beyond the competition itself.

The choir’s participation in previous World Choir Games has included arrangements of spirituals and works by Nigerian composers.

At the 2024 Games, for example, its Spiritual category programme included Norman Luboff’s arrangement of “Joshua”, Moses Hogan’s “Hear My Prayer”, and spiritual arrangements by Alice Parker, Robert Shaw and Marques L. A. Garrett.

The wider 2026 competition provides a suitably international backdrop for the latest achievement.

INTERKULTUR says the Helsingborg Games bring together choirs from around the world in both the Champions Competition and the Open Competition.

The Champions Competition is intended for experienced ensembles with international competitive credentials, placing Mountain Top Chorale’s latest success in the event’s higher competitive tier.

The Games are also designed to be more than a contest. Friendship concerts, educational activities and workshops form part of the programme, reflecting INTERKULTUR’s emphasis on cultural exchange and the idea of singing as a means of bringing communities together.

That spirit is particularly visible in the 2026 programme, which includes a Peace Concert in Helsingborg featuring choirs from Sweden, Romania, Mexico, New Zealand and Chinese Taipei.

For Mountain Top Chorale, however, the immediate focus is on a result that confirms its standing among the international competition’s leading ensembles.

The choir’s 87.38-point performance in the Spiritual category has delivered another gold medal for Nigeria and another major international honour for the MFM-affiliated ensemble.

As the World Choir Games continue in Helsingborg, Mountain Top Chorale’s achievement gives Nigeria a powerful musical moment on the global stage and extends a remarkable competitive story that began more than a decade ago in Lagos.
