Moniepoint CEO Nigerian talent gap concerns emerge as Tosin Eniolorunda cites hiring struggles and skills mismatch in Nigeria

Tosin Eniolorunda, Chief Executive Officer of Moniepoint, on Monday raised concerns about a widening talent gap in Nigeria, stating that the company has struggled to fill hundreds of roles due to a mismatch between applicants’ skills and global standards.

The Moniepoint CEO Nigerian talent gap remarks came as Tosin Eniolorunda disclosed that more than 500 vacancies have remained unfilled since 2024, despite what Tosin Eniolorunda described as a large pool of applicants.

Tosin Eniolorunda said many candidates fail to meet the expectations required to compete at an international level, describing the situation as a troubling development for a country long regarded for its intellectual potential.

“I used to feel Nigerians are really bright,” Tosin Eniolorunda said, adding that current hiring challenges suggest deeper systemic issues affecting workforce readiness.

Tosin Eniolorunda attributed part of the problem to shifting social influences, including the impact of digital culture and informal economic activities, which Tosin Eniolorunda argued may be distracting young people from acquiring critical professional skills.

The comments have sparked debate within Nigeria’s technology and business sectors, with some stakeholders agreeing that skills development requires urgent attention, while others caution against broad generalisations about the workforce.

Industry analysts note that Nigeria’s rapidly expanding digital economy has increased demand for highly specialised skills, intensifying competition for qualified talent and exposing gaps in education and training systems.

The Moniepoint CEO Nigerian talent gap concerns highlight a growing challenge for employers seeking to scale operations, as companies balance expansion with the need for a workforce capable of meeting global benchmarks.

Tosin Eniolorunda’s remarks are likely to fuel ongoing discussions about education reform, youth engagement and the future of Nigeria’s labour market in an increasingly competitive global environment.
