The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced a Device Checker service that enables consumers to verify mobile phones and other communications devices by dialling *315#.
The service forms part of an enhanced Type Approval Compliance framework that took effect on October 7, 2026.
It aims to protect consumers, safeguard network performance and ensure devices meet required technical standards.
Consumers can check a device by dialling *315# and following the prompts, or by visiting the official portal at www.ncc.gov.ng/devicechecker. They may also call the toll-free number 315 for assistance.
When verifying a different device, users may need to enter its 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number, which can be obtained by dialling *#06# on the handset.
The NCC advised Nigerians to verify devices before making payment, especially when buying second-hand phones. A successful check confirms that the model is Type Approved and the specific device is verified for use on Nigerian mobile networks.
An unsuccessful result does not automatically mean a device is counterfeit. Buyers are advised to ask the seller to resolve the issue before completing the purchase.
Director of Technical Standards and Network Integrity, Edoyemi Ogoh, said the Commission had already registered about 231 million existing devices. Users of those phones do not need to take further action.
The framework covers smartphones, feature phones, tablets, modems, POS terminals and other SIM-enabled equipment. Non-compliant devices risk being denied access to Nigerian mobile networks.
