NDLEA cannabis seizure Kwara hits 2.3 tons in one week, with four suspects arrested and a street value running into billions of naira

NDLEA cannabis seizure Kwara has stunned residents as operatives intercepted 2.318 tons of the illicit substance in separate operations within a single week.

State Commander Fatima Popoola revealed the breakthrough on Tuesday during a press briefing in Ilorin.

According to Popoola, the seizures were carried out in coordinated raids along the Offa and Omu-Aran axis between 3am and 5:30am.

Four suspects were arrested after concealing cannabis in Canter trucks and sacks of sawdust in a bid to evade detection.

“This is one of the biggest seizures we have made in a single week in recent times, with a street value running into billions of naira,” Popoola declared.

The arrests included one suspect with 1.2 tons, another with 300kg, and two others tied to a 720kg bust. A J5 vehicle, initially assumed empty, was later discovered fully loaded with cannabis.

The NDLEA cannabis seizure Kwara highlights the scale of trafficking challenges in the state. Popoola emphasized that drug abuse has fueled violent crimes in communities such as Kaiama, Chikanda, Patigi, Edu, and Omu Aran.

In comparison, only two tons of drugs were seized in 2024, while more than 2,000kg had already been intercepted from January to August 2025.

She attributed this success to stronger synergy between NDLEA, the police, army, civil defence, and traditional rulers.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by his Special Adviser Saadu Salahu, praised the operation, noting the government’s partnership with community leaders, religious institutions, and civil society to intensify awareness campaigns on the dangers of drug abuse.

He urged residents to stay vigilant and support the collective fight against trafficking, assuring that the NDLEA cannabis seizure Kwara is a clear sign of progress in curbing drug-related crimes.
