Michelle Hundley Smith, a North Carolina mother who disappeared in 2001, has been found alive, authorities confirmed.

The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office announced that Smith, now 62, was located somewhere in North Carolina. Her current location remains undisclosed at her request.
Smith was last seen on December 9, 2001, leaving her Eden home to shop at a Kmart in Martinsville, Virginia. She never returned, prompting a missing person report and an extensive investigation.
Multiple agencies, including the North Carolina SBI, DEA, and FBI, assisted in the decades-long search. Despite numerous leads over the years, her whereabouts remained unknown.
A breakthrough came on Friday, February 20, 2026, after detectives received new information. Two detectives confirmed Smith’s identity, and she does not appear to face any criminal charges.
The sheriff’s office praised the dedication of investigators and partner agencies, stating their persistence ultimately led to locating Smith.
Smith’s daughter, Amanda, thanked supporters on a Facebook page dedicated to the case. She confirmed her mother chose her new life and plans to focus the page on other unsolved missing persons cases.

Amanda reflected on her father’s theory, noting he believes Smith may have left intentionally, though she admitted uncertainty about what happened that night.
