NANNM condemns the brutal killing of Nurse Chinemerem Pascalina Chuwumeziem, calls for urgent investigation and better security for healthcare workers

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), FCT Council, has expressed profound sorrow and outrage over the brutal killing of Nurse Chinemerem Pascalina Chuwumeziem of the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja.

In a statement on Tuesday, Comr. Jama D. Medan, Chairman of NANNM FCT Council, revealed that Chuwumeziem had completed her afternoon shift on 3 January 2026 and boarded a vehicle home, but her lifeless body was later found dumped in a distressing and inhumane manner.

Medan described the incident as a senseless attack not only on the nursing profession but also on healthcare workers and humanity at large.

He urged the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to carry out a thorough, transparent, and professional investigation to apprehend the perpetrators.

Highlighting the daily insecurity faced by nurses, Medan called on the FCT Minister to strengthen security around hospitals and major commuting junctions, especially during early morning and late-night shifts.

He also recommended the provision of safe and organised transport for healthcare workers to prevent further tragedies.

“Our lives are no longer safe. Nurses leave their homes daily to save lives, yet many are uncertain of returning alive to their families,” Medan said.

The association extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, the management of the Federal Medical Centre, and nurses across the FCT and Nigeria, while demanding urgent government intervention to guarantee the safety of healthcare workers.

“Anything short of decisive action will further expose nurses to danger and erode public confidence in the nation’s security system,” Medan warned.
