Oluseyi Babaseyi, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, said the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, ordered an investigation into the incident after video footage of the confrontation circulated on social media.
“The Ogun State Police Command will today charge three suspects before the Ago-Iwoye Magistrate Court following an investigation ordered by the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, psc, FCSS, MNIPR, into an incident involving the alleged obstruction and serious assault of police officers performing their lawful duties,” Babaseyi said in a statement.
The incident occurred on September 29, 2026, when a police team led by ASP Akeredolu Emmanuel intercepted an unregistered Toyota Camry at Fibigbade Street, Ago-Iwoye.
According to the police, officers were conveying the vehicle to the station when a Toyota Highlander with registration number JJJ 215 JV allegedly blocked their movement at Abobi Street.
The command said a physical confrontation subsequently occurred, during which INSPR Abolarinwa Wasiu and CPL Olubamiro Adeniyi were allegedly assaulted.
Video recordings of the confrontation later circulated on social media and were reviewed as part of the police investigation.
Following the directive from Ojajuni, detectives examined the circumstances surrounding the incident, visited the scene and arrested the three suspects.
Babaseyi said the suspects would face five counts relating to conspiracy, obstruction of police officers, alleged serious assault on police officers and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The police command said the case reflected its position that members of the public should use established legal channels when raising complaints against officers rather than resorting to physical confrontation.
“The Commissioner of Police reiterates that the safety and protection of police officers performing lawful duties remain a priority of the Command,” Babaseyi said.
The command also urged members of the public to pursue grievances through lawful mechanisms.
“Members of the public are encouraged to channel complaints through lawful mechanisms and avoid physical confrontation with police personnel,” the statement added.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Ago-Iwoye Magistrate Court as the legal process begins.
