Governor Monday Okpebholo has alleged alarming Edo criminal recruitment where residents travel outside the state to hire kidnappers and robbers, handing victims to local accomplices amid security concerns
Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo, Christian Association of Nigeria leaders, and concerned residents addressed pressing security matters in Benin City on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, as the governor raised the alarm over claims that some locals now recruit criminals from other parts of Nigeria to carry out kidnappings and armed robberies.

The governor told participants at the 2026 Ministers Conference organised by the Edo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria that certain individuals travel out of the state to hire outsiders who perpetrate the crimes before handing victims over to local collaborators in the bush.
He linked sudden wealth displayed through expensive cars and houses to such illicit activities, often disguised as proceeds from internet fraud.
Senator Okpebholo warned that those arrested for involvement in these crimes should expect no leniency, urging the public not to plead on their behalf.
He also criticised what he described as a wave of false social media reports on insecurity, citing an incident along Sapele Road where security forces were deployed based on unverified claims.
This latest statement comes against the backdrop of persistent security challenges in Edo State, where kidnapping and cult-related violence have troubled communities for years.
Previous administrations faced similar accusations of rising crime, prompting the current government to deploy volunteers into forests and strengthen law enforcement collaboration to prevent criminals from establishing bases.
Religious leaders at the conference commended the governor’s efforts, with Pastor Margaret Agbonifo of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria offering prayers for his success and describing him as potentially the best governor to lead the state.
She also prayed for President Bola Tinubu, noting the fuel subsidy removal as a tough but necessary decision contributing to current economic hardships.

The governor’s remarks powerfully highlight the human cost of crime on families and communities, while calling for collective vigilance and support for security initiatives to restore peace and prosperity across Edo State.
